Episode 9 Won't Save The Amazing Digital Circus

I was never a *huge* fan of the Amazing Digital Circus, but I followed along because I liked the concept and I thought the characters had potential. Apparently it'll end this June with episode 9, and my first thought was "huh? already?" because to actually flesh out the characters and establish the setting, they'd need way more time.
Honestly one of the reasons I was never die-hard for this show is the aesthetic. The animation is beautiful, fluid, fun and creative, but at the same time I think it's way too good. It never really felt like being trapped in a simulation because everything had very realistic looking textures and dynamic atmospheric light scattering. There were nods to the early 3D they were paying homage to, but all in all the art direction is way too polished to achieve the uncanny valley early 3D renders had. Glitching and out of bounds scenes and referenced and portrayed but only in a really polished way unlike real glitches and out of bounds.
Even in the character animations and designs, I really wished that uncanny valley effect came through. The character designs never really captured me either partially because of that, but also because they feel like they don't belong in the same show. This works with shows like Drawn Together where all characters are from different genres of animation, but here I don't think it makes much sense for them to have such dissimilar feel to them. Pomni straight up feels overdesigned next to everyone, especially simpler designs like Jax or Gangle. Gangle and Zooble (and even Kinger) are way too abstract compared to the more humanoid and expressive characters. Cain I think hits the mark just right as a computer AI that doesn't really understand humans, his design is uncanny in a way more of this show needed to be. On the other hand, Zooble and Gangle's more abstract designs even unintentionally suggest to the audience that they're related to Cain in some way, which is confusing and adds to why the character designs feel not too well thought out.
And this isn't even to say that they're technically bad. In a vacuum they're all really interesting and well animated. I adore whatever's going on with Jax face and Gangle's unconventional anatomy too, as well as Zooble's interchangeable parts and how they all are animated. That said, put together into the same show these designs don't really talk to each other or to the world. All in all, I think the animators really flexed their muscles here but that's exactly my issue. They flexed too hard and it ended up not serving the narrative.
